We’ll have “Fox Island” clothing, books on the history of Fox Island and maps of the island. Membership applications and renewals to the Fox Island Museum will be available. We hope to have applications available for the Annual Fox Island Garage Sale being held on Saturday, September 12th.
In an ongoing effort to correctly display our Native American items we are constantly updating our displays. It will continue to be a work in progress over a significant period of time.
Our focus is to identify the tribes that have had a direct connection with Fox Island and share their individuality as well as common beliefs.
They repeatedly use the term “resilience” on their websites and by showing items from the past and present we hope to emphasize this in the exhibit.
We will have four display cases in the exhibit. The 2 display cases shown above are Chehalis on the top and Puyallup & Nisqually on the bottom.
On Tuesday, June 23rd, 2026, the Fox Island Museum awarded their annual scholarship to Nathaniel Dietrich. Nate’s parents and brother were in attendance. Nate graduated with a 4.0 GPA from Gig Harbor High School. It was an honor to award this fine young man $2000 to help with his ongoing educational needs.
The George Weis Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Dr. Weis. He was a very talented man and dedicated his professional life to being a radiologist.
He also, along with his wife Marie, was a very generous contributor to the Fox Island Museum. His talents in photography, knowledge and interest in history, combined with a strong sense of community were invaluable to the functioning and essence of this museum.
This willingness to improve the quality of life for others is also present In Nate’s essay which he graciously read to those in attendance.
While at Western Washington University, he plans to pursue the field of history followed by a teaching endorsement at the secondary level. He is also interested in obtaining a second major in psychology to better understand human behavior in how people learn and subsequently how best to teach.
His exemplary grades in challenging course work are to be commended. His glowing references shed light on his character. An example of these was shared by his Spanish teacher. “Nate is consistently an eager learner, his attention in class is extraordinary, his sense of humor is a breath of fresh air, and his active engagement is one that I wish would rub off on his peers.
It should now be clear to all, why Nate was chosen as this year’s winner of the Fox Island Historical Society’s $2,000 scholarship.
Karen Kretschmer, Museum Vice President awarded the scholarship and Cheryl Wagner, Museum Treasurer presented the check. Marie Weis was also in attendance to congratulate Nate.
